This programme is playing an increasingly catalytic role in making the linkage between business and government in the implementation and delivery of the tourism subject in high schools.
GTTP SA relies on business support and their involvement to assist it to achieve its aims. An important part of any successful tourism education programme is the support of local, national and global business partners. Tourism businesses are encouraged to play a proactive role in ensuring that what is being taught in the classroom is relevant to the needs of industry.
Strengthening the provision of tourism education in high schools in this way will contribute towards:
- Human resource development needs of the industry – ensuring that the tourism curriculum meets the needs of industry assists young people make a successful transition from school into the labour market
- Employment creation, economic growth and poverty reduction, by creating an awareness amongst the youth and their communities of tourism-related entrepreneurial opportunities
- Sustainable tourism development, as young people develop an appreciation of South Africa’s many tourist attraction and the need to preserve them for the enjoyment of future generations
The business sector, as a key actor in social and economic change, has a leadership role to play in helping government to build the tourism sector into a sustained generator of economic growth and job opportunities.
The GTTP SA’s business partners provide financial grants and in-kind support, as well as internship (work-study) opportunities to learners and teachers.
